Acceptance to any degree program at BCTS will be granted only aer evaluation of the application, reference form, and ocial transcripts has been made. The application must be accompanied by the appropriate fee.

2. Graduate Program

a. Master’s Programs

All Master’s programs require satisfactory completion of a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. Bachelor’s degree equivalency is understood in the sense that the applicant has satisfactorily completed 120 credit hours of college level work in which he/she received “C” or better.

- Personal Statement (in 250 words or more) describing reasons for wanting to study with confession of faith

- Official transcripts of all academic work undertaken since graduation from high school. A final ocial transcript indicating that the bachelor’s degree or its equivalent has been granted should be submitted.

- Application Fee ($50)

b. Doctoral Programs

All doctoral programs require satisfactory completion of a Master’s degree program or its equivalent. This equivalency is understood in the sense that the applicant has satisfactorily completed 45 credit hours in BCTS, in which he/she received “B” or better.

All doctoral candidates should have satisfactory fulfillment of all deficiencies.

All doctoral candidates should submit Recommendation for Candidate Status by the student’s major professor.

이 “상응”이란 BCTS에서 42학점 이상을 취득하고, 모든 과목에서 B학점 이상을 받은 경우를 의미한다. 모든 박사과정 지원자는 부족 학점을 충족해야 한다.

또한 모든 박사 과정 지원자는 책임 교수의 ‘박사 후보 추천서’를 제출해야 한다.

Courses and Descriptions

Choral Conducting / 9 Credits

A study of conducting to develop technique through facial expression, breathing, alignment and gesture. Emphasis is placed on developing and refining a process of score study. This course will assist conductors in evaluating their conducting and preparing them to make conducting decisions based upon score study. In addition to building on the conducting skills taught in Conducting I, Conducting 2 & 3 will focus upon acquisition of a broad range of rehearsal methods and techniques and gaining a comprehensive knowledge of choral ensemble warm-up philosophies, methods and techniques. Conductors will continue to study various approaches to score analysis that aid in preparation for rehearsal. Participants in the course will be required to submit a comprehensive case study which focuses on rehearsal technique and rehearsal procedures.

Choral Literature 1~2 / 6 Credits

A comprehensive survey of choral repertoire from the Renaissance through the twentieth century. Through historical and stylistic study, students gain an understanding of the major traditions of choral music and broaden their repertoire knowledge.

Choral Masterclass / 3 Credits

An advanced workshop in interpretation, rehearsal methods, and conducting gesture, applied to Renaissance through twentieth-century choral works.

Choral Development / 3 Credits

This course focuses on the essential skills of choral conducting, including interpretation, rehearsal strategies, gesture and visual technique, and choral blending. Students develop both the artistry to create a beautiful choral sound and the professional qualities of an eective conductor.

Choral Rehearsal Techniques / 3 Credits

Study and practice of systematic, ecient rehearsal methods, designed to cultivate the skills required for eective and inspiring leadership as a conductor.

Choral Diction / 3 Credits

Students acquire proper diction techniques for English, Latin, and German, enabling themto perform choral works with clarity, accuracy, and expressive beauty.

Seminar in Choral Music / 3 Credits

An intensive study of a specific area of choral history and literature. The content of this course will vary from semester to semester with the special interests and qualifications of the professor teaching it. Emphasis is placed upon in-depth study of the selected repertoire.

Orchestra and Choral Seminar / 3 Credits

This seminar provides training in conducting large-scale choral works with orchestral accompaniment. Students study both choral and orchestral scores and develop rehearsal and conducting techniques for chorus and orchestra combined.

Choral Pedagogy / 3 Credits 

Exploration of eective approaches for teaching interpretation, rehearsal strategies, and conducting techniques in diverse educational settings.

Graduation Recital Preparation  / 3 Credits

This course aims to prepare Conducting Recitals from repertoire planning to the final performance. Students design, prepare, and present a one-hour choral conducting recital. The program must include works from four stylistic periods, by three dierent composers, and in three languages. Participants in this course will study Intensive score analysis, advanced rehearsal techniques, performance practice and baton technique.

합창지휘 레슨 / 9학점

표정, 호흡, 자세, 제스처를 통한 지휘 기법을 개발하는 과목이다. 악보 연구 과정을 발전시키고 세련되게 다듬는 데 중점을 둔다. 이 과목은 지휘자가 자신의 지휘를 평가하고, 악보 연구를 바 탕으로 지휘 결정을 내릴 수 있도록 돕는다. 합창지휘 I에서 배운 기초 위에, 합창지휘 II와 III에 서는 다양한 리허설 기법의 습득, 합창 앙상블의 워밍 업 철학 및 방법에 대한 포괄적 이해에 집 중한다. 또한 리허설 준비에 도움이 되는 다양한 악보 분석 접근법을 지 속적으로 탐구한다. 수강 생은 리허설 기법과 절차에 초점을 맞춘 종합 사례 연구를 제출해야 한다.

합창 문헌 1~2 / 6학점

르네상스부터 20세기까지의 합창 레퍼토리를 포괄적으로 탐구하는 과목이다. 역사적· 양식적 연구를 통해 학생들은 합창 음악의 주요 전통을 이해하고 레퍼토리 지식을 넓힌다.

합창 마스터클래스 / 3학점

합창 지휘 전공자는 합창 발달, 리허설 테크닉, 합창 음악 세미나, 오케스트라와 합창 음악, 합창 마스터 클래스, 합창 딕션, 합창 지도법, 졸업 연주 준비 등의 핵심 과정을 이수한다.

합창 지도법 / 3학점

합창 지휘에 필요한 핵심 역량—해석, 리허설 전략, 제스처 및 시각적 기법, 합창 음향 조화에 초점을 맞춘다. 학생 들은 아름다운 합창 사운드를 창출하는 예술성과, 효과적인 지휘자로서의 전문 성을 동시에 개발한다.

합창 리허설 테크닉 / 3학점

체계적이고 효율적인 리허설 방법을 연구·실습하는 과목으로, 효과적이고 영감을 주는 리더십을 발휘하기 위한 지휘자의 역량을 기른다.

합창 딕션 / 3학점

영어, 라틴어, 독일어의 올바른 발음법을 익혀 합창 작품을 명확하고 정확하며 표현력 있게 연주 할 수 있도록 한다.

합창 음악 세미나 / 3학점

합창사 및 문헌의 특정 분야를 심도 있게 탐구하는 과목이다. 내용은 담당 교수의 연구 관심사 와 전문성에 따라 학기 별로 달라진다. 선택된 레퍼토리에 대한 심층 연구에 중점을 둔다.

오케스트라 및 합창 세미나 / 3학점

오케스트라 반주가 결합된 대규모 합창 작품 지휘 훈련을 제공한다. 학생들은 합창 및 오케스트라 악보를 연구하며, 합창과 오케스트라를 통합하여 리허설·지휘하는 기술을 익힌다.

합창교수법 / 3학점

다양한 교육 환경에서 합창곡 분석, 리허설 기법, 지휘 기법을 효과적으로 가르치는 접근법을 탐구한다.

졸업 연주 준비 / 3학점

졸업 연주를 위한 레퍼토리 선정부터 최종 공연에 이르기까지 준비 과정을 다룬다. 학생은 1시간 분량의 합창 지휘 연주회를 기획·준비·발표해야 하며, 프로그램에는 네 가지 음악 양식 시대, 세 명 이상의 작곡가, 세 가지 언어가 반드시 포함되어야 한다. 이 과목에서는 집중적인 악보 분석, 고급 리허설 기법, 연주 관습, 바통 테크닉을 함께 학습한다.

Curriculum Overview

Graduate conductors take a core curriculum of Choral Development, Rehearsal Techniques, Seminars in Choral Music,

Orchestra and Choral Music, Choral Masterclass, Choral Diction, Choral Pedagogy, and Graduation Recital Preparation.

Recital Overview

One or two public recitals are required for the Master degree in choral conducting.

Student must apply for recital dates in the beginning of the Semester and they must be prepared to conduct the recital program

for the approval of a faculty in advance.

The repertoire of the Master’s recital must include works from four stylistic periods and in three different languages.
